A broad & challenging curriculum

The IB Diploma Programme emphasises the development of the whole individual — physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically. This is achieved through students studying six subjects from different curriculum areas in addition to central components that develop skills beyond the student’s chosen subject curricula.

Group 1 Studies in Language & Literature

Group 1 courses support students in continuing the development of their mother tongue, fostering a rich appreciation for the complexities and subtleties of language and literary texts. Through close analysis and critical interpretation, learners deepen their understanding of how meaning is shaped by context, culture and authorial intention.

Students may study English A Literature, Polish A Literature or pursue a self-study language option, enabling them to maintain and strengthen their academic proficiency in their first language. The courses encourage thoughtful engagement with a wide range of literary works, spanning different genres, periods and cultural perspectives.

By exploring texts in depth, students refine their analytical writing, oral communication and interpretative skills. The programme cultivates intellectual independence, sensitivity to language and the ability to articulate nuanced ideas with clarity and confidence — essential skills for success in higher education and beyond.

Group 2 Language Acquisition

An essential component of the IB Diploma Programme is the study of an additional language, recognising the importance of communication in an increasingly interconnected world. Language Acquisition courses are designed to develop students’ linguistic competence while fostering intercultural awareness and global understanding.

Through the study of English B, French B, German B or Spanish B, learners build confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing. The courses emphasise meaningful communication, encouraging students to express ideas clearly, engage in discussion and interpret authentic texts within a variety of cultural contexts.

Beyond language proficiency, students gain insight into different perspectives, traditions and ways of life. This experience strengthens empathy, adaptability and open-mindedness, preparing learners for international study, global careers and active participation in a multicultural society.

Group 3 Individuals & Societies

Courses within Individuals & Societies seek to develop a critical understanding of human behaviour, social systems and the forces that shape our world. Students examine how cultural, historical, political and economic contexts influence societies, institutions and individual decision-making.

Through the study of History, Geography, Psychology, Business & Management and Environmental Systems & Societies, learners explore diverse perspectives and analytical frameworks. They engage with case studies, research methodologies and contemporary global issues, strengthening their ability to interpret evidence, evaluate arguments and construct well-reasoned conclusions.

The programme encourages independent inquiry, intellectual curiosity and ethical reflection. By analysing both past and present developments, students gain a deeper awareness of global interdependence and are well prepared for further study in the social sciences, humanities, business and related fields.

Group 4 Sciences

Students in Group 4 explore the key concepts, theories and methodologies of their chosen scientific discipline, developing a rigorous understanding of how scientific knowledge is constructed and applied. Through practical investigation and analytical inquiry, learners cultivate curiosity, precision and a deep respect for evidence-based reasoning.

The sciences offered include Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science and Physics, each providing a distinct perspective on the natural and technological world. Students engage in experimental work, data analysis and collaborative projects that strengthen their ability to think critically, solve complex problems and communicate scientific ideas with clarity.

Beyond academic knowledge, the programme encourages reflection on the broader social, environmental and ethical implications of scientific advancement. By connecting theory with real-world challenges, students are prepared not only for further study in scientific and technological fields, but also for thoughtful participation in a rapidly evolving global society.

Group 5 Mathematics

The IB Diploma Programme requires all candidates to undertake a course of study in Mathematics, recognising its essential role in developing logical reasoning, analytical thinking and problem-solving skills. Mathematics within the IB framework supports students in building a deep understanding of mathematical concepts while applying them confidently in a range of academic and real-world contexts.

Students may choose between Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches, which focuses on theoretical understanding, algebraic fluency and abstract reasoning, and Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation, which emphasises practical problem-solving, modelling and the use of technology. Each course is designed to suit different academic strengths, interests and future career pathways.

Through rigorous study and structured inquiry, learners develop precision, resilience and intellectual curiosity. The programme prepares students for university study across a wide spectrum of disciplines, from engineering and the sciences to economics, business and the social sciences, ensuring they are well equipped for the challenges of higher education.

Group 6 The Arts

Subjects within The Arts category encourage creative development and critical reflection within a chosen discipline through both artistic expression and in-depth research. Students are supported in developing their imagination, technical proficiency and personal voice, while also engaging with the cultural, historical and theoretical contexts that shape artistic practice.

Through the study of Music or Visual Arts, learners refine their practical skills and build confidence in presenting and evaluating their own work. The programme fosters independent thinking, disciplined practice and the ability to communicate ideas with clarity and creativity. Students learn to analyse artistic works, reflect on their own progress and respond thoughtfully to feedback.

Alternatively, students may choose to broaden their academic pathway by selecting an additional subject from Group 2, 3 or 4. This flexibility allows each learner to personalise their IB Diploma experience, aligning their subject choices with their individual strengths, interests and long-term university ambitions.

The IB Learner Profile

As an international school with a diverse student population, we hold the 10 principles underpinning all IB programmes close to heart. All curricula overseen by the International Baccalaureate Organisation seek to develop students with an international mind-set who recognise their common humanity and the importance of creating a better and more peaceful world.

Risk-Takers

We approach uncertainty with forethought and determination; we work independently and cooperatively to explore new ideas and innovative strategies. We are resourceful and resilient in the face of challenges and change.

We thoughtfully consider the world and our own ideas and experience. We work to understand our strengths and weaknesses in order to support our learning and personal development.

Thinkers

We use critical and creative thinking skills to analyse and take responsible action on complex problems. We exercise initiative in making reasoned, ethical decisions.

Cross-curricular components

Aside from offering a broad and challenging curriculum, the programme includes three important components. All IB Diploma candidates are required to successfully complete the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge course and 150 hours of extra-curricular activities in the areas of Creativity, Action and Service.

The Extended Essay

Engaging students to take an in-depth study in an area of their interest, the Extended Essay is a research essay of sufficient depth to allow for a meaningful academic investigation. Students are supported by an advisor who has a background in the subject of investigation to offer advice, review drafts and suggest the next steps for the successful completion of the task.

Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)

All candidates are required to undertake 150 hours of extra-curricular activities over the two years of the Diploma Programme. Their time must give equal weight to exploring creative pursuits, sporting and athletic pursuits and serving the local and global community through charitable endeavours. Students keep a log of their achievements and experiences.

Theory of Knowledge (TOK)

Alongside the academic rigour of the IB Diploma Programme, the Theory of Knowledge component prompts students to analyse their own perceptions of knowledge and how we actually know things. TOK provides a thought-provoking conclusion to school-based education and is an excellent preparation for further study at university.
